Southern African Shipyards based in Durban, South Africa is the largest shipyard in Southern Africa and provides complete in-house marine solutions through Ship Building, Ship Repair, Naval Maintenance and Oil Gas. Currently Southern African Shipyards is taking part in two tenders for the South African Navy, which have been rated among the largest projects in the last decade. To ensure that the tenders have the most cost efficient solutions, Southern African Shipyards decided to implement a cost management system. After the evaluation of different systems, Southern African Shipyards selected the German solution, “CostFact”. CostFact was specially developed for the maritime industry and in close cooperation with several of Europe’s leading shipyards, which means that a number of best-practice methods have been incorporated into the system, covering all of a shipyard’s calculation demands. Besides the internal acceleration and improvement of the costing processes, Southern African Shipyards expects from the use of CostFact the capability to identify the design solutions which fulfil the requirements of the South African Navy at the lowest cost.
